What does Bling-Bling mean?
Bling-Bling is a phrase that emerged in the hip-hop culture of the 1990s in the
USA. The rapper B. G. is regarded as the creator of this new phrase. In one interview
B. G. stated that if he had registered Bling-Bling as a trademark he would never
have had to sing again. This was his response to the amazing phenomenon of this
word, which in translation means: shining, eccentric ... This word was originally
used to describe the flashy jewellery that was popular in the hip hop and rap community.
Today it is used in connection with cars, mobile phones, luxury watches, glasses
and celebrities. For example, the French use the word bling-bling to describe a
showy, distinct and calculated attitude – an image, style of dressing and behaviour
used, for example, to describe French President Sarkozy.
The word was added to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary in 2002.
